Brief Position Overview

The Gianforte School of Computing invites applications for the inaugural Hambly Chair, an endowed professorship. The successful candidate will be an early (at least three years beyond earning a Ph.D.) to mid-career researcher with impressive accomplishments that are commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be expected to build and/or maintain an internationally recognized research program, teach both undergraduate and graduate courses consistent with the candidate’s background, and participate in professional/service activities.

General Statement

The Gianforte School of Computing, housed in the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering ( NACOE ), invites applications for the Hambly Chair, an endowed professorship with primary responsibilities in research, teaching and service/outreach. The successful candidate will be an early to mid-career researcher with impressive research accomplishments that are commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be hired as an Assistant or Associate Professor and become an integral part of the School of Computing. Duties will include building and/or maintaining an internationally recognized, externally funded research program, teaching and developing courses consistent with their background and participating in professional/service activities. Candidates with machine learning expertise will have the opportunity to contribute to a statewide, $20 million, 5-year NSF EPScOR grant entitled SMART FireS (https://www.mtnsfepscor.org/projects/smart-fires) (Sensors, Machine learning, and Artificial intelligence in Real Time Fire Science).

The Hambly Chair was established through the generosity of Larry and Anne Hambly. Larry Hambly earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from MSU in 1968 and a master’s degree in physics from California State University, Los Angeles in 1972. He pursued a 35-year career defined by the rise of computing, first in the aerospace industry and culminating with 20 years at Silicon Valley-based Sun Microsystems, where he held numerous executive positions in sales, marketing and services.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain a nationally recognized, externally funded research program; produce scholarly works; contribute to Computer Science undergraduate and graduate instruction, mentor and advise; and participate in professional/service/outreach activities.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field that was earned three or more years ago upon start date.

  • An established, internationally recognized research program (Associate Professor candidates) or a research program that can gain international recognition (Assistant Professor candidates).

  • Evidence of scholarly and professional achievements commensurate with experience.

The Program

The Department

The Gianforte School of Computing (GSoC) at Montana State University supports the mission of the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering and the University through its teaching, research, and service activities. The GSoC serves approximately 500 majors, 100 minors and 50 graduate students by preparing them for computing careers and for a lifetime of learning.

The GSoC offers a broad array of curricular opportunities in computing areas that include Computer Science (minor, B.S. degree, B.A. degree, M.S. degree, Ph.D. degree), Data Science (minor, a proposed B.S. degree, M.S. degree) and Cybersecurity (M.S. degree). Montana State University received a generous $50 million dollar gift for a new computing building in 2022 and the GSoC looks forward to serving as its anchor occupant when the building opens in 2026.

The College

The Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering comprises five academic departments (Chemical & Biological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Gianforte School of Computing, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering) and is home to numerous research centers such as the Center for Biofilm Engineering and the Western Transportation Institute. The College enrolls approximately 3,400 undergraduate students and 250 graduate students.
