As a Deli Shift Lead, you'll be leading by example and inspiring our team to deliver outstanding service. You'll have the freedom to share your ideas and creativity as we work together to continuously improve our business and make a difference in the lives of our customers.
Deli Counter, Grab and Go, and Bakery Case Operations
Prepare sandwiches to order and serve customers from hot and cold deli cases.
Operate scale and accurately weigh and label deli case items
Offer samples, suggestions and ways to prepare products and call for backup as needed
Ensure freshness of deli items by rotating and by keeping batches separate by date
Label or sign items with price and ingredients when required by established standards
Promote Membership benefits with non-members
Assist in preparation of catering orders when necessary
Follow food preparation/food handling sanitation procedures in compliance with Health Department regulations
Maintain proper levels of inventory in Grab-and-Go case to ensure that is well stocked and faced
Pull old or low-quality items, record and properly dispose of them, following established procedures
Juice Bar, Salad Bar and Hot Bar Operations
Prepare fresh juices, smoothies, coffee drinks and tea, operating juicer and espresso machine
Prepare items for salad bar according to checklists
Ensure adequate condiments, utensils and containers at salad bar/hot bar
Accurately and efficiently operate cash register and process customer payment
Ensure department transfers are completed accurately
Call for back-up as needed to minimize wait time for customers
Ensure temperatures are taken and recorded
Business Leadership and Communication
Participate in on-the-job training of new employees, helping to ensure they are properly trained
Provide feedback for employee performance to Deli Management
Take an active role in coaching employees to success in their job by using Open and Direct Communication
Find coverage for shifts vacated due to absence/illness. Cover shift if no replacement is found
Ensure the department operations are running efficiently in absence of the department manager
Proactively and continually seek and implement innovative solutions to increase quality, value, service and efficiency for our members and customers
Treat people with dignity and respect and behave ethically with integrity at all times; tolerate no less from others
Business Operations, Safety and Compliance
Alert Management of potential theft or other emergencies
Wash dishes according to established guidelines
Receive and check in orders to ensure quality and quantity match expected
Maintain fully stocked department by accurately cutting, wrapping, pricing, labeling and stocking product
Place and pull special orders for customers
Coordinate tasks for staff when there are no customers to serve
Maintain work area in sanitary and orderly condition following guidelines set by Deli Management
Clean up spills immediately and take out trash after shift
Open and close the department according to checklist standards
Report customer suggestions, comments, complaints to Deli Management
Attend Deli staff meetings and other assigned training requirements
Participate in inventory counts
Keep department equipment in working order and advise Deli Management of equipment problems
Identifies self as employee by being in VNF attire and nametag
Perform any other duty as assigned by Management Team
Requirements
Mandatory Qualifications:
Must be 18+
English proficiency
Excellent time management, organizational and communication skills
Detail oriented and able to multi-task and remain flexible to the changing needs of the business
Regular, predictable attendance
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous customer service, cash handling and supervisory experience (1-3+ years)
Familiarity with POS systems
Familiarity with natural foods, grocery industry or cooperatives
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift/push/pull/carry up to 30 pounds frequently; 30-50+ pounds occasionally
Manual dexterity with ability to reach, grasp and perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, and fingers for extended periods of time
Mid-to-general range visual acuity to evaluate and interact in working environment and operate deli equipment for extended periods of time
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
Regular exposure to refrigerated/frozen and hot/humid environments
Ability to climb ladders, kneel, crouch, and bend occasionally required
Ability to be exposed to, work with, and directly handle dietary allergies including, but not limited to: gluten, wheat and flours; dairy and soy; meats and shellfish; peanuts and tree nuts
Ability to work safely with sanitation supplies
