Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include are Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. ​​Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.​

​​We are the Azure SQL Connectivity team. We are responsible for ensuring millions of customers around the planet can login to their Azure SQL Databases (and Synapse) billions of times a day. The connectivity plane tracks the location of 100 million+ databases and serves traffic to the right location amidst constant movement of databases. The Azure SQL Connectivity team is at the intersection of planet-scale distributed systems and low-latency, high-performance computing.

We are looking for a highly technical, highly motivated Principal Software Engineer to join our team. You will make fundamental contributions to the reliability, security, performance and availability of the entire connectivity plane, while working with a team of other highly motivated experts in the field.

Your vision and expertise will ensure our connectivity stack is setup to handle the exponential growth of Azure SQL in the near future. This is an opportunity for you to fundamentally influence the technical direction of the Azure SQL DB service and deliver a world class login experience to our valued customers.

Responsibilities

  • ​​Work with cross-org and cross-functional teams and implement the next phase of connectivity, scalability, and reliability features of SQL DB to help propel the next wave of fundamental capabilities for our cloud databases offerings.

  • Provide guidance, mentorship and leadership to other engineers, and to enable them to succeed.

  • Stay updated on recent trends in the database world focusing on reliability, scalability, availability, resiliency and system design. Be open to experimenting with promising trends on these focus areas that might open up new avenues of growth for SQL DB.

  • Be part of the on-call rotation for maintaining service health, and help improve SQL Connectivity's cutting-edge auto-detection, auto-mitigation, auto-rca systems.

  • Conduct code reviews and write code that help shape and steer the team into industry-leading quality-first coding practices.​

Qualifications

Required /Minimum Qualifications

  • ​​Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of experience with shipping high-performance C++ or C#/Java software.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • ​​Demonstrated experience leading high-performing engineering teams that work on system software

  • Understanding and/or experience with, Network Gateways and Proxies, Microservices and Cloud Computing. ​

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
