LEGAL SECRETARY

The Indigent Defense Commission of Utah is seeking a new Part-Time Legal Secretary/Receptionist *to join the team! If you have experience in a law office or similar setting managing court filings this could be a great job for you! This position will be part-time non-benefited working up to 20 hours per week from the hours of 11am to 3pm with all hours being in-office work. *Principal Duties As the Legal Secretary/receptionist,you will perform a variety of legal secretarial duties such as:

  • Receiving client calls,taking and relaying messages,responding to requests for information; providing information or directing caller to appropriate individual.
  • Meeting note taking
  • Typing and preparing reports,legal documents,or other written materials from source documents,transcription,etc.
  • Preparing and/or processing documents; reviewing and editing for accuracy and completeness; updating information and/or evaluate against policy; comparing elements for consistency or logical relationships,etc.
  • Filing documents with courts or assisting in case preparation/management.
  • Maintains and/or creates files or record keeping systems. Sorts,labels,files and retrieves documents,or other materials.
  • Providing other related support to Attorneys,Paralegals and/or Legal Assistants as needed to expedite legal services in a state agency.

Ideal Candidate

The best candidate for this position will have:

  • Experience working for,or closely with,a prosecutor s or defender s office,court,or other criminal justice agency where managing criminal court filings and related paperwork was a major assigned responsibility.
  • Experience e-filing paperwork with the courts.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency t o work in a paperless environment.
  • Strong customer service skills and comfortable managing client calls.
  • Additional preference may be given to paralegals and/or certified legal secretaries.

The Indigent Appellate Defense Division

IADD s mission is to protect and defend the rights and dignity of each of our clients through zealous,compassionate,and client-centered advocacy. The Division is statutorily mandated to provide appellate defense services to indigent individuals in third through sixth class counties,in the areas of adult criminal appeals,juvenile delinquency,and child welfare/parental termination. The Division accomplishes this representation in these appeals through its appellate staff attorneys and by contracting with independent appellate attorneys who have been qualified to provide vigorous assistance of counsel in accordance with the Sixth Amendment of the United States Constitution,and article I,section 12 of the Utah Constitution.
