Portland General Electric Trading Analyst (Bidding Strategy) in Tualatin, Oregon

PGE’s Trading Strategy & Analytics team is seeking a Trading Strategy Analyst to join our dynamic team. In 2017, PGE joined the western Energy Imbalance Market (EIM), operated by the California ISO (CAISO).

In this role, you will collect fundamental information for generation resources and load demand for electricity, natural gas and other commodities related to the bulk electricity market that impact the operation of commodity markets; conduct market sector or statistical analysis and interpret key market data elements into useful trading information. Perform analysis on data sets that may require scripts, codes, languages, etc. Perform modeling and communicates with traders as well as external stakeholders.

You will work on:

  • Provide post trade-day analytics to Merchant Operations.

  • Prepare and present training material on Market Fundamentals trade/bidding analysis.

  • Maintaining generation resource data templates for the CAISO master file.

  • Support the development and improvement of models and software to further optimize interactions with CAISO markets.

  • Tracking and evaluation of performance metrics associated with market operations and trading analytics. Collaborate with the settlement group as it relates to EIM settlements and billing.

  • Provide analysis to complete a wide variety of data requests in support of numerous groups within PGE. Act as a resource for both operational, and rate-making purposes.

  • Maintain tool(s) to support plant performance.

  • Support CAISO Market Analysts.

You will be someone with:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and related experience preferred.

  • Typically five or more years in the energy industry or a related field. Experience in market trading and asset optimization.

  • Knowledge of electric industry power operations, including wholesale power trading, thermal and hydro power plant operations.

  • Experience in analyzing trading opportunities and trading strategies in one of the following markets CAISO/SPP/ERCOT/MISO is highly desired.

  • Experience in providing analytical support to power trading or asset portfolio management.

  • Experience with production cost/economical dispatch modeling, data mining, statistical analysis preferred.

  • Knowledge of energy markets including market pricing and valuation principles.

  • Ability to think across the three affected functional areas (Power Operations, Balancing Authority, Plant Operation, Rates and Regulatory and Engineering).

  • Ability to effectively communicate the impact of complex market rules to executives and general managers.

  • Ability to problem solve and obtain results within time constraints.

  • Ability to write clearly and concisely.

  • Ability to prioritized tasks across multiple areas and help team members with prioritization.

  • 3-8 years of utility and/or traded market experience. Career level will depend on experience.

Compensation Range:

$96,300.00 - $160,500.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
